Jim, Welcome Home Brother! I was in C Company from Dec 67-Dec 68. Any of us that served in the 589th or units attached to it are our Brothers and we are glad to hear from you. We are trying to put together the history of the 589th and anything you have that could help us do so would be appreciated if we can get a copy of it. Please don't feel that since you came at a different time or for different reasons that you are not welcome as I can say "WE" all welcome you home and are glad to have you added to our association.

To All, my name is Jim Casto, I started my tour in Vietnam in June of 1970. I was assigned to the 687Th Landclearing Company, Engineers, 18th Engr Bde. After 6 months with the 687th, the Unit was Deactivated and I transfered to the 84Th Engineer Bn, D Company, located in An-Khe. Not long after I arrived, the Unit was packed up and moving somewhere else. We convoyed from An-Khe to a place called Con-Soom, I don't know if this is the real name of this place or not, I don't even know if I spelled it right. or even pronounce it right. This move was so far away that on February 1st of 1971, all of D Company of the 84th Engr Bn became C Company of the 589th Engr Bn. Our new base was just above the Na- Trang Pass between Ban- Me- Thout and Na- Trang. I have in front of me, a set of Special Orders from the 18th Engr Brigade assigning 69 of us to C Company, 589th Engr Bn of which after reviewing the Members Page, I am the only one from these orders on the Members Page. This is only a partial list of Men as there were probably more Orders for other Men that are not on this set. These Orders may have been made up by Rank, all ,other than one PV2, everyone else is a SP4 and there are no Leaders on these Orders. This is a long post, however I felt compelled to post it simply because of all the posts about people not coming to the Reunions. The 687th has a website simular to yours and when these sites were created, it was more geared towards the Men of that time frame and not the Men that came after you Men left Vietnam, you can see it all the pictures and by who attends these Reunions and it's a really great thing for all of you as it should be. I don't attend the Reunions because I choose not to, however, I know that you Guys and your Families have a great time just by reading all the Posts and I read them on a daily basis. This Post is much to big so I will stop now and as always, God Blees You All and Your Families.

Nick, I agree. We try to make evryone feel welcome, and want everone to be welcome. I know we all get cought up in our little groups. But lets face it, it beenover 40 years since some of us have seen each other. So if we hurt anyone feeling last year, I am sorry. We just like to be to be gether and talk about times So don't be aftraid. Get in on the fun. HELL! have a few beers and have a good time.That what it all about.

The 589th Association started with small groups of us who knew each other coming together. Thus, most companies tend to have members that are predominantly from one or two small groups and year groups. While that is good, it unfortunately means that some individuals who were not part of those groups or year groups might feel left out. Don't feel that way. In the past the Earthmoving Platoon of C Company was the largest group of C Company - but over the past few months we have located members of other platoons. Regardless, anyone within the 589th is welcome to join C Company at any time. Select a drink of your choice; partake of the food that our wives have provided; you don't have to say or do anything unless you want to; just join us and listen to our lies (I mean historical truths). We especially invite lost members of A Company since we have a special A Company Re-education program. Whatever you do, do not feel left out.

Nick, I will be there with bells on. Can't wait to see all of my Mountian Movers Buddies.I just hope a lot of people show up.

I have had the opportunity to talk to many of our members that are coming to the reunion this year. Some are coming for the first time and I hope we all make them feel welcome. The one thing that I hear from everyone is that they are really looking forward to coming and talking to old freinds. Many say the reunion is the best thing that has happened to them recently and has helped soothe many a bad memory. My point is that if you have not attended a reunion or have not signed up this year you have missed a great oppurtunity to see "old friends" and make new ones. Sure hope to see more of you sign up in the future. In the meantime let us know how you are doing and if we can be of assitance in any way. The other thing I have heard many times is be sure to sign up at the VA if you have not already. Good luck to all and see you in a few short weeks if you signed up this year. If you did not we will miss you. Welcome Home to all!!

It is with sad heart that we have to report the passing of another Brother. Willian Holt of HHC passed away on July 24, 2012. Judy said he was really looking forward to coming to the reunion again this year. It does make one realize that life is too short and can change at anytime. I hope you will put Bill's family in your thoughts and prayers.

Does any one remember a SSG McKenney that was in the Bn. In 1970 to around MAR 1971. Hs nick name was TATER. I think he was from Panama City Fl. If any one remembers him sent me a message on my E-Mail address.
